Mastering the Material

I'm still figuring this out, but I know that my possessions have a real impact on my life. Not necessarily in the way of "cool possessions make life good", but in the sense that having too much, or being surrounded by things that do not bring joy or fill my life with love tend to dissipate my energy. Clutter sucks my motivation and makes me lose focus; order, and being surrounded only by things that bring me joy, facilitate productivity and are in some sense spiritually nurturing.

This weekend (Canadian Thanksgiving) is a time of organizing and purging. My sister has gone through all the things she has left in the house, which was an amazing feat. I'm cleaning out my closet (again) and files, and bookshelves, as best I can, trying to leave only those things that are meaningful. I think I'm beyond collecting for the sake of it; and mementos are losing some of their meaning. What brings me joy RIGHT NOW? seems a more useful way of thinking about things.
