Lookin' good

My hair was getting out of control, so I returned (after about 6 months) to my cool stylist. She also agreed that my hair lacked ... style. We settled on 2 inches off and layers. Layers always sound good! Bring out the curl, you know. Very appealing.

Since she straightens my hair when she cuts it, the style looked at first like that famous 90s icon, Jennifer Aniston. I had the Aniston, and I worked it for a few days. Then I washed it. The result was a little less fashion icon, a little more mullet. Or poodle, perhaps (hey, I'm not complaining. At least it brought out the curl!). Mom thought it looked like Farah Fawcett. Hmm.

The day after washing, it took yet another turn: 80s lead singer in a rock band. Wild and shaggy and, yes, layered all over. I wonder why I always forget what the end result of cool layers is?

In any case, I'm enjoying it. Reminds me of my hair in high school, in a really fun (non-traumatic) way.

Freestyle: embracing the fantasy

As I continue dreaming about having a week-long "Freestyle" TV marathon, I came across a hilarious article in the Washington Post about a woman whose apartment was chosen for Freestyle:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/21/AR2006062100519.html
So apparently it's not fully free, and not always as stylish as the home-dwellers would like. So shattering! :)
But still, strangely, it doesn't change my love of the show. The fantasy of living in the lovely homes and apartments they have - beautiful wood floors, big windows and lovely floorboards and moldings; of owning great furniture and basics they can use to decorate with what you have; and the pleasure of a beautifully coordinated room where I feel at peace.

Still a fan!

Space

My sister came to visit and we did a second clearing-out of my clothes. I can't believe how much we got rid of. Clothes I don't like, that don't fit or I don't wear. Goodness, the joy!

The end result: a more compact collection of clothes that I like! I even, perhaps, love. And now all the right things fit together in a pile with everything like them. So I have one pile of T-shirts. One pile of tank tops. And those are both in the same drawer, together with my single pile of shorts. And with all like things together, it's so much easier to find what I want!

The added bonus is space. Things now hang easily in my closet. And I now have empty shelf space. Empty! Nothing in there! It is such a soothing sensation to see that space - there to be used, if I need it, but not being used now. I can breathe more easily knowing I have that space.

It's the same, I think, with having chunks of time-space and nothing in them. The past 6 months have had so many activities and commitments. There was something to do almost every little chunk of time. I couldn't just do nothing. Every weekend, every day, had some bit of work or a meeting or even just fun things like a class or jam session in them. But no nothing. No empty-ness, open to whatever I felt like doing. No whole day or days to let my mind wander, body relax and creativity create.

Both temporal and physical space are essential for me. They allow me to breathe and get to the more fun, creative and nurturing things I want to do.

Out with the old ... in with the new?

Yesterday one of my awesome friends came over and helped me purge my closet. This is a regular ritual for me - I sometimes accumulate clothes quite quickly and sometimes don't let go of them quite as quickly. So I tried on everything hanging in my closet and we got rid of VERY LARGE bag of clothes. Many of them didn't fit quite right. Others didn't have flattering colors. Some just weren't really me.

What a huge relief to have space in my closet now. I can access all my clothes, and they're all hanging nicely on their own hangers. Matching white ones, except for the sloped ones and the skirt/pants hangers.

I find that when I get rid of things I don't really love, it frees me to enjoy more the things I keep and love. A new clarity of vision? Fewer distractions? Undiluted pleasure in my possessions? Maybe the mind can only hold so many clothes in its memory at once. In any case: I feel a renewed enthusiasm for my wardrobe after getting rid of so much.

There are still some piles of things we didn't go through - a big shelf of sweaters and pants; my shoes; jewelry; and a dresser of shirts, undergarments and pajamas. Yes, I have a lot of clothes. I hope to purge them in the near future as well.

Clearing out space means I'm open to receive more. But I want to say, quite firmly, that I don't really want more. I really like and love a lot of my clothes, and feel that I definitely have enough. I have more than enough for the various occasions in my life. I would far rather just continue to enjoy what I own than to buy more, which will only clutter up what I have now.

Being Young

I've been having strong memories of what it was like to be young. Or younger. Either way - I saw the world very differently as a teenager and in my early 20s, compared with now. Things were much more intense. Black and white. And specific.

I had a fashion sense that I thought was highly individual, but was often incredibly repetitive. I remember some of the outfits that I knew would finally create the cool image I wanted: Oversized T-shirts (XL) with colorful tributes to environmental issues, layered over also-too-big long-sleeved shirts and baggy jeans. Hiking or army boots, weighing down my little body.

Or this one outfit that epitomized my dream of alternative chic. We had a guest speaker at a major environmental conference we organized at our school. She did things with a provincial environmental group, so represented all that was cool. She walked in the day of the conference wearing a plain white oversized T-shirt in a light-weight fabric, the front of it tucked in, the back hanging out. The jeans were slightly baggy and loose at the ankles; the belt was wide and black leather. Oh, to recreate such an outfit! Yet I couldn't fathom spending the money it would involve simply to buy the belt; and couldn't seem to figure out where they sold t-shirts like that, of lighter-weight fabric. However, I did proceed to tuck in the front of my T-shirts.

I wonder what other fashion memories I might dredge up?

Glasses

I got a pair of polarized Anne Klein sunglasses from Winners. Oh, I like them! Big lenses, very classic look, and extreme UV blockage. I am happy health-wise AND stylistically!
