Noah's Ark

We live on the edge of town, surrounded by farms & orchards (as well as suburbia). On the drive into town, I pass an amazing field that has the most beautiful assortment of farm animals I've ever seen: brown goats, white goats, alpacas, sheep, ostriches, and who knows what else. All roaming around this one field, enjoying the grass, the sun, and apparently the company. They look so happy, are such a beautiful mix, it fills me with joy every time.

When they're inside, sometimes you can see the other pair that share the field: Horse and Donkey. Horse is shiny brown and tall; Donkey is donkey-grey and short. They also seem to enjoy each other's company, and you'll frequently see them hanging out together in some random corner of the field.

This all reminds me of my fascination with Noah's Ark. I don't know why I love that story so much - maybe the total destruction, or maybe the work that goes into surviving, or maybe the idea of renewal. I read a retelling recently by David Maine called The Preservationist. It was utterly brilliant, offering the story from about 8 different perspectives - Noah, his wife, his sons, their wives.
